![]() ![]() Eventually, Groening found a way to combine his art and his prose in a still simple yet increasingly sophisticated version of Life in Hell and did so subsequently in his extremely great, miracle-of-popular-culture cartoon show, The Simpsons. Groening worked for a dinky giveaway newspaper, the Los Angeles Reader, where he started drawing the barely stick-figure panels that became his comic strip Life in Hell, and reviewed records in a column called ”Sound Mix.” But because the local music was so lousy, Groening soon began writing about his quirkier musical passions (Frank Zappa, world music, and, er, Frank Zappa) and then started spouting opinions on stuff that had nothing to do with music - or rather, everything to do with good music: sex, politics, sports, etc. including the books Love Is Hell, School Is Hell, Work Is Hell, The Big Book of Hell, and The Huge Book of Hell. ![]() But a rock critic was what Matt Groening (see?) was - sort of. ![]() punk was mostly awful - the children of Hollywood trying to co-opt British youth rage - it was not a good time to be a rock critic. She grated on my nerves a little bit especially all her actions with Marin, her sister-in-law. ![]() Nella had quite a big development arc, however, it was almost glacial to start with as she was overwhelmed by the change and stubborn. They played an interesting part in the story, but the story wasn’t really about them, it was about relationships and money. I had read the book description and yet it was still a shock to me that the cabinet house and the miniatures were not as big of a plot point as I thought. I will be honest, I didn’t know entirely what to expect. The book came up again whilst we were researching for one of our posts and then I saw it on the shelf in the library and decided it was probably a sign. I’ve seen this book come up a few times on various different sites and the premise has always intrigued me. She gets in contact with a mysterious miniaturist who creates wonderfully accurate models but the tiny creations seem to mirror real-life happenings. Johannes gifts Nella with a cabinet-sized replica of their home to decorate as she pleased. The house is splendid but not welcoming and Nella finds herself trying to unravel the secrets of those who reside in the house her husband, his sister and their two servants. Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to start her new life as the wife of wealthy trader, Johannes Brandt. The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton is set in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. ![]() ![]() ![]() She also has such a talent for defusing situations, which makes her perfect for the beast, however some of her ideas do tend to put him in more of a fury at times! She is so good natured and her heart is kind that she continually tries to find the best in everyone around her even those who have done her harm in the past. She is seeking knowledge to help free the beast as well as continuing to try and help her struggling family. ![]() ![]() He wants her for way more than just helping to break his curse.īenella is growing into such a strong independent woman in part 2. Deceit blew me away and I felt like there was so much going on in part 2 of this series that I am not sure how much I can say without spoiling everything! We pick up exactly where we left off in Depravity, and we find Benella and the beast in a quite a game of cat & mouse. Full review to come closer to release date, I beta read this & LOVED IT! The first thing that surprised me was Corey's choice to base this story so many years after the last. Persepolis Rising is set around 30 years after the events in Babylon's Ashes which has given time for the multitude of new human colonies to develop and one such colony world, Laconia, has plans to rule all of human space. It's hard for writers to always be consistent so I like to give them the benefit of the doubt so I purchased this title. However, as usual, I don't like to ditch a series once I've read the first few parts and liked them. I was pondering whether to even get Persepolis Rising after the rather disappointing Babylon's Ashes and especially after some early Luke warm reviews. ![]() |
